Green Schools

I. Description of Problem or Issue

Our issue has how schools can easily switch to be "green". Meaning by the phrase "go green", we are aiming for schools to make a conscience effort to protect the environment by conservation of energy. many of the steps that can be taken are easy and within reach Schools can save allot of money by going green while setting an example to their students.- elisabethjohnston elisabethjohnston

II. Research Summary

For my question, how can going green in school save energy, I researched the positive effects of going green both environmentally and financially. Overall i found a weath of information about going green in homes and buisnesses but little information about school. After further research, I was able to find information about school that have gone green and some of the figures that they have saved. From that information, I was able to draw my own conclusions about the importance of going green and its overall effect on the school, the community and the environment.

My question was how much money schools can save by going green. I found tons of articles from using the libraries research tools. Many schools districts are making efforts to conserve energy and save tax payer's money. I was surprised to learn about how schools can be certified as green and that all students in a construction phase must now use alternative energy sources.- elisabethjohnston elisabethjohnston

II. Group Product Overview

To present the information we have found, our group plans to gibe facts about saving energy to the class as a small introduction. From there, to get the class moving and out of their seats, we plan to play a game called "Stand up Sit Down" where we ask the class several questions about their schools in relation to global warming. If tthe students answer to the question is "yes" the student sits down. If the answer to the question is "no" the student remains standing. The purpose of the activity is to make the class aware of the growing problem of energy conservation and how schools are doing little to nothing to help teach and encourage the idea of going green. From this point in the presentation, member of the group will ask the class waht they know about global warming and what the term going green means. This is to formally introduce our topic. After the formal introduction each group member will discuss what they have found in relation to their question. When this is completed, out group will break up the class in to teams and asks question based on our presentation to see how well the students were paying attention.

V. Group Reaction/Opinion(s) about Issue

The presentation was on overall success. I feel that although there were soome rough sections, the presentation went smoothly and interested the audience. I feel that our group used the time allotted very well and provided a wealth of interesting, important knowledge.
Overall, our presentaion was a succes. We were able to discuss the aspects of our question that we needed to address while keeping the class interested and entertained. I feel that we were able to come up with a creative way to showcase our knowledge and share the importance of the research we had gathered. When doing the stand up sit down activity, I feel the class was interested and heppy to get up and out of their seats. I feel that if the class payed more attention to the simple directions, the excercise would have went smoother. Although the introduction questions about global warming and going green were simple, I feel the class was unwilling to participate. In the end, when playing the wrap-up games, I feel the class could have been more interested but participated. Overall, the presentation was a success. - cwa9023 cwa9023

I think the presentation went pretty well. Since students have not taught about global warming to the students in our class, not allot of people know what global meant. I feel as though all of my group members did a really good job presenting the information and it went allot more smoothly then I expected. I have always been really into environmental studies and did my senior project on global warming and how to go green. For my project I made a presentation, al gore style at my local library to my community. Since I had this background and the interest of this topic, I thought this project was really interesting and fun. I hope everyone in the class got something out of the presentation as I did. - elisabethjohnston elisabethjohnston
